Welcome to the Great Plains Society of the Society of American Foresters. The Great Plains Society is composed of foresters and other natural resource professionals working in Kansas and Nebraska. While Kansas and Nebraska are known for their wide expanse of prairie and grasslands, forestry does play an important role in both states.

Forests from the west and the east come together in the plains as the central hardwoods extend into the eastern part of the states and the Ponderosa pine extend into the west. Through the management efforts of Kansas and Nebraska foresters, these forest lands continue to grow and thrive. Streams and rivers are lined with cottonwood and other tree species that provide protection and habitat. Windbreaks, shelterbelts and “urban and community” forests also provide important benefits that improve the quality of life on the Great Plains.

Communities in Kansas and Nebraska are leaders in community forestry activities.
